[ #PSYCHOLOGY 🧠 EXPLAINED]

A thread explaining some psychological concepts that @BTS_twt have been using on their mvs and that inspired their albums as well such as: Conscious, Unconscious, Persona, Ego, Shadow and Anima (archetypes), Individuation and Jungian Psychology:
I’ll try to explain these concepts as easy as possible. Keep your mind open. It’s okay if you have no idea about #Psychology 🧠 and how it works. I’ll try to explain the basics so you can make your own #BTS theories! [First: Psyche = Mind]
First things first. What’s #Psychology 🧠?

“Psychology is the scientific study of the MIND and BEHAVIOR. Is a MULTIFACTED discipline and includes many sub-fields of study such areas as human development, sports, health, clinical, social behavior and cognitive processes.”
This is important because there isn’t just “one Psychology”. When we talk about Psychology the first thing that comes to our minds is Freud. But there’re different perspectives and a lot of authors too. This perspectives are just different ways to UNDERSTAND how our minds work.
The most “famous” ones are:

▫️ #Structuralism (Wundt...)
▫️ #Functionalism (W. James...)
▫️ #Psychoanalysis (Freud, Jung) (we’ll focus on this one) ☑️
▫️ #Behaviorism (Watson, Skinner...)
▫️ #Cognitivism (Chomsky...)
▫️ #Humanism (Maslow...)
Let’s focus on #Psychoanalysis since this one is the most related to @BTS_twt. We’ll talk about #Freud and how he influenced #Jung.

Freud was the first one to use terms like “Conscious” and “Unconscious”. He used the analogy of an iceberg to describe the 3 levels of the mind.
I’ll explain those concepts with an easy example in a minute. The most important thing here is the Unconscious (for both #Freud and #Jung).

Here lies the processes that are the real cause of most behavior (according to #Psychoanalysis) 🧠
⚪️ FREUD: In the Unconscious we have the primitive wishes and impulse kept at bay (repressed) and mediated by the preconscious area. (I’ll explain it ☺️).

🔴 IMPORTANT: The goal of #Psychoanalysis 🧠 is TO MAKE THE UNCONSCIOUS CONSCIOUS. Keep this in mind.
I’ll try to explain these concepts with an easy example:
THAT’S YOUR UNCONSCIOUS. You’re unconscious in this case is telling you that, deep down...you still love that person. That you’re not 100% over it. But that doesn’t mean you wanna date them again. Or...maybe yes? It’s up to you.

It’s a way to communicate with yourself.
That’s why #Freud focused a lot on dreams since sleeping is a total loss of consciousness. @BTS_twt made references about dreams too. So, we could sum it up like:
▫️Conscious (I don’t love that person anymore).
▫️Unconscious (Mmm...you lowkey do).
#Freud believed there was a “door” that was closed while we’re awake (Conscious). But, once we fall asleep...that door opens a little bit (Unconscious). That’s also when we’d have “access” to a trauma, for example. Like a “Journey to the Center of the Earth”...I mean MIND.
That door, as you can see, also protects us from trauma or triggering thoughts. It sometimes works like a “don’t think about that. Don’t look there”. Like a “protection to the vulnerable ego”. This “door” is related to Jung’s #SHADOW and #EGO.
[BTW: the reason why that feeling (loving that person) is repressed is because you consider it “not acceptable” for several reasons. For example: that person was a bad person, toxic, he/she/they made you cry, they didn’t treat you right, didn’t support you...]
Freud believed that by dreaming we communicate with ourselves. Like having a conversation we don’t want to have when we’re awake or “conscious”. Like a “we’re not ready for this conversation” thing.
So now that we get those concepts let’s move to Carl Jung.

Did you know that #Freud and #Jung were actually friends? They worked together for a long time but they went separate ways.

@BTS_twt use both perspectives, Freud’s and Jung’s as you’ll see.
I recommend you to watch the movie “A Dangerous Method” (Viggo Mortensen as #Freud and Michael Fassbender as #Jung) to get to know them. As you can see...Jung’s theory was a little bit more complex (he was more focused on #Mysticism):
We can also see both of them #Freud and #Jung (and also another one, #Adler) in the movie “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles”:
#Freud and #Jung both believed that our dreams were keys to understanding our waking selves and the problems we experienced.

But Jung believed that dreams could be understood through “ #archetypes”. Remember this word, it’s super important for @BTS_twt.
⚪️ #JUNG: #archetypes are figures or concepts that occur across cultures and history, SHARED, in essence amongs people (this is related to the first video; A Dangerous Method).

He also said that there’re “AS MANY ARCHETYPES AD THERE ARE TYPICAL SITUATIONS IN LIFE.”
Here I talked about how @BTS_twt could be representing archetypes on their mvs: https://twitter.com/nwinter_bear/status/1235259190937038848
#Jung believed that #archetypes helped us understand the world. In the first scene we saw in “A Dangerous Method” Jung thinks he KNEW what was going to happen ‘cause “something” told him it was going to happen. That “something” is the Collective Unconsicous 😅
I decided to add these videos from Crash Course ‘cause they always explained these things SO well. Here they explain what’s an #archetype and what the “ #CollectiveUnconscious” is.

[Example: Greek Gods 🔱 represent archetypes too!]
And, as you can see, this is related to a Journey (Individuation). @BTS_twt made reference to a Journey already (Map Of The Soul: The Journey) and I think they’re talking about the “Hero’s Journey” I talked about before (you don’t need to read it now 👍🏼) https://twitter.com/nwinter_bear/status/1269659514317537282
And also see how that “Hero’s Journey” is related to finding yourself (related to Star Wars, The Wizard of Oz, The Lion King, The Little Prince...) and reaching the #SELF just like in #StayGold (this is a theory) as #Jung suggested. https://twitter.com/nwinter_bear/status/1276495174588301313
So what #Jung is trying to say is that we’re borned with knowledge.

Examples: when we’re babies we know were to get food (or milk) 🍼🥛from: our mom’s breast 🤰🏻🤱🏻 Or we can recognized danger since we’re little.
. @BTS_twt got inspired by #Jung’s archetypes like: #PERSONA, #SHADOW, #ANIMA, #EGO (and probably they’ll focused on the #SELF; the one we’ll reach onces we finish our “journey” or individuation).
An easy example of the #PERSONA is Jay Gatsby from #TheGreatGatsby. A man who puts on a mask and makes other people think he’s a sucessful man and super rich (but he’s not):
Another easy example to see how the #PERSONA works is Ken Kaneki from #TokyoGhoul:

🔴SPOILER🔴 Here we can see the #PERSONA (Haise Sasaki) and the #SHADOW (A part of Ken Kaneki) (Haise has Kaneki repressed).
Then we have the #SHADOW (like that repressed part of Ken Kaneki, the Joker...most villains represent the human’s SHADOW).

ARMY believes that Taehyung could represent the Shadow in the BU and @BTS_twt mvs. Let me know what you think! 💜
And the #ANIMA. We’ve seen @BTS_twt with girls on the Highlight Reel. ARMY thinks that these girls aren’t real and that they represent BTS’ Anima (like if they were proyecting their animas):
Then we have the #EGO. This archetype, in a few words, “protects you” from triggering things. Like a friend who defends you and supports you no matter what to protect you...even if you’re wrong. This one is related to #Freud’s “id”.
And last but definitely not least, we have the #SELF. ARMY thinks Jin is the SELF in the BU. Once we finish our (Hero’s) Journey or Individuation, we’ll “meet” our SELF.
In other words...if “red, blue, green, yellow, purple” are colors...the #SELF would be the “rainbow” or the whole “color palette” 🎨 @BTS_twt
I HIGHLY recommend you to watch these videos ‘cause they explain really well #Psychology and Jungian Psychology with more examples and they have subtitles in different languages too:
