Before I began this anime, many people told me to play the game first which is understandable. To those who've played the game, the anime seems rushed and cuts a lot of content out. But personally, to someone who haven't played the game- the anime is near perfect in execution.
For one thing, the anime is more accessible than the game itself. What I love about the show is how it keeps you hooked start to end. I remember not wanting to sleep because I NEEDED to know how the story ended. Cliff hanger is employed a lot, but not so much that it's annoying.
Another reason why I found the anime so appealing is because it was a whole new genre to me. Psychological Horror and horror is entirely different, you might want to note. The mind games; cleverly worded words and the whole detective based "game" makes it all the more appealing.
If you watched Akame ga Kill, you'll know the heart wrenching fear of knowing the character you like may die. You don't know who dies next, or whether they'll even die, or how they'll die. No matter how much deaths you see, you'll still feel heavy in the heart.
And somehow even if it is obvious that the character you are rooting for will die, you'll kind of find yourself hoping that isn't the case. I don't think there's any other anime that portrays the mystery and psychological horror genre better than Danganronpa does.
Enough about that however. I want to talk a little bit more about the important things a lot of people take into consideration when deciding to rank anime comparitvely with other shows, specially in regards to animation, character and world building, art, plot and music.
Art: Look at those eyes. You won't see those in any other anime. The way the characters are drawn and colored is solely unique to Danganronpa. Even if you haven't played or seen the series after S1, you'll recognize a Danganronpa character from miles away. Points for uniqueness.
Character building: Emotion is a key factor when it comes to character development. If it wasn't obvious already, the show is centered around fear. Try thinking from the perspective of the characters. Fear of death, the trauma of seeing friends die, self loathing for-
Even considering to kill their classmates. Having to hide evidence and lie to their friends after even having done such a horrible thing. If it wasn't much obvious already, using fear is a very strong tool to give each character individual development, especially when taking-
Into consideration their motives for doing all the things they are doing. As a result you'll find yourself attached to almost every character especially when their past is brought up. They also each have their own nuances and uniqueness which is to be expected.
Plot: Truth be told, initially when you read the synopsis; as much interesting it is- the "survival game" plot isn't exactly new although this is being integrated into a high school settings making it interesting as the characters all have the thought process of a teenager.
But as the story progresses, you'll find that the plot is much more than surviving. Like I said, the whole show is on a basis of mystery. Majority of the things being done, makes no sense because of a tiny little detail which is missing.
What I am trying to say is, even if it adopts the "survival game" idea- it's so much more than that. Think of it as spice to the main dish honestly. It's so much more than surviving and living.
Moving on to the animation. Seen the death scenes? I don't think that needs anything more to be said.

The music (speaking primarily of the opening, OSTs and ending) fits the vibe of the anime. I mean, that's the first I've seen an anime opening being a rap.
I think that is the end of my review thread though I'd love to tell way more- this thread is long enough as it is. This is my first review so I'd appreciate the support and feedback.
