The divide between Inuit I follow on Twitter demanding that the Edmonton Eskimos change their name and my Inuit friends on Facebook wanting them to keep the name is interesting.
I want them to change the name. It’s a dumb name that will just sound dumber as time goes on.
The debate is interesting and in some ways a proxy for other things. The reaction to the Inuit intelligencia (including myself) arguing against the name adds to the feeling I think that the ruling Inuit class will dice deeply into symbolic actions...
While day to day life gets worse. I get the argument that leaders and organizations can do more than one thing at a time, but the name change and trips to international conferences and focus on issues that are internal to the ruling class are seen as low priority things
I remember one of the young guys I worked with asking “Who will we sue for our shit?” I think about that a lot. It’s kind of like the debate that happens in the south when a city wants to bid on the Olympics or a world event. If you’re barely scraping by it seems wasteful.
No job. No house. Barely enough food. All kinds of crap going on around you. But yeah, let’s talk about the name of a football team.
For real though. Change the name. Quickly. But before you dismiss Inuit who either don’t care or like the name- maybe give their perspective some thought?
