To underscore what @hiattf and his colleagues @PostOpinions argue so eloquently in this piece, this Trump politicization of higher education is outrageous & detrimental to US national interests. https://twitter.com/hiattf/status/1280819873950633992
First, Trump's decision alienates a foreign population of students who usually become our allies. Foreign students on average come away from their time in the US with a more positive view of our country. This decision undermines this U.S. "soft power" advantage.
Second, the United States NEEDS the best and the brightest from around the world to not just come the US for education but to stay and make our economy stronger. We will lose to China if we stop attracting the smartest people in the world to come to the US to study & work.
Third, I know personally many Stanford students from around the world who will suffer from this inhumane policy, designed solely to help Trump win votes. We are the United States of America! This is not how we usually act ! We used to be better than this. Stop this insanity.
& to @Stanford, I will happily teach a course in our football stadium "in person" for all of our international students as a way to get around this illogical edict. Possible course topics: "Irrational ICE Policies" or "How Trump Has Undermined American Democratic Institutions."
