THIS DAY IN CADETS HISTORY: On July 9th, 2018, the corps membership rioted!
Context: after returning back from a lightning delayed show on July 8th in Orlando, the corps had not eaten since 3:30 PM. They performed well after 10:00 PM. Upon arrival at the housing site, the corps was told that housing had fallen through for the next day.
The corps membership had been closely monitoring the new YEA! member policies, as it had been 17 days on tour without a block off. 12 days without laundry, in Florida.
The admin team assured the members that July 9th would be a full free day, laundry block included. Surprise, the members did not go to the beach at 1:00. They rehearsed from 1:00-4:00.
The members prepared for a reduced beach day. And waited in the parking lot for two hours for the buses to return, told that the A/C on the bus would work. Surprise again, no working A/C for the brass bus and SAND EVERYWHERE.
Given two hours at the beach, the members awaited news of where they would travel for laundry. Surprise, the laundromat was closed for the brass bus! The bus drivers were asked to bring the members back to the housing site. Not before guard vets had already started laundry though
And the straw that broke the camel’s back: news that housing had fallen through yet again and an updated schedule! The members would stay at the housing site and receive a three hour bus ride from FL to GA the next day. An hour longer than the free day.
The members began to riot. They had used their laundry free day to rehearse and not do laundry, meaning that later in the week, they would lose rehearsal time to do laundry.
Several brass veterans went rouge and commandeered a washing machine in the school’s wrestling gym to wash the undergarments of the drum corps. It took until 3:00 AM to finish.
Others began to riot in the gym, and outside of the gym. Footage of the event is well-documented. Feel free to add yours!
Happy July 9th, Cadets. ❤️💛
