Here is a thread of the common responses I’ve received from Church leaders/institutions/influencers when I’ve brought concerns of racist content to their attention:
1: The “I don’t have the mental energy or capacity to fully respond to your concern.” This is usually followed by an in-depth explanation for why their stance is right and I’m wrong for making a fuss.
2: The “White supremacy is thrown around more than it should be right now.” Full stop. No explanation.
3: The “I think we can agree to disagree on this point.” About whether or not the racist issue in discussion is racist.
4: The “No one is supposed to be aware of every single issue that is happening in the world right now.” This reaction has come from multiple people in positions of church leadership in response to concerns of blatant racism in their church community.
5: The “We’ve already talked about Black Lives Matter as a community.”
6: The “I would be happy to talk about this further in a scheduled meeting.” This is followed by a block. Next a block from the church itself.
I prayed for a very long time about whether I should disclose this thread. I’ve made mistakes in bringing my concerns forward in a self-righteous attitude before, and I regret that decision. This is a compilation of anonymous, across-the-board reactions to concerns brought in..
