I read this and then stared at my great grandfather's homemade hand plane, at the brush i pet my cat with, at my trombone, at my dice jar, at the old wooden ladder i've made a shelf of, the dictionary of american handtools on that shelf i've read cover to cover bc i wanted to.. https://twitter.com/JellyMuppet/status/1280905501249765376
i love handtools, as functional, personal artifacts. this is a false dichotomy because of course it is. tools can be things, use can be enjoyment, work can be play. this person acknowledges as much in the comments, that the real answer is gonna be "both." https://twitter.com/JellyMuppet/status/1280923269969989632?s=20
But then, why frame the question this way? why urge people who reject that framing to pick anyway rather that engaging with them about why they answered that way? https://twitter.com/JellyMuppet/status/1280905929991561217?s=20
oh. that's why. https://twitter.com/JellyMuppet/status/1280909900659466240?s=20
anyway, if you're gonna bend over backwards to frame a poll such that you can use the answers to justify the line you want to draw in the sand between games you have decided are worthwhile and games you think are a waste of space, please don't drag tools into it.
Anyway here are some of my favorite old hand tools
