So I was writing to a friend back home who was wondering what the hell is going on here in the mighty US of A.
With copious French expletives I told my friend that even if you tried you could never design a more perfect weapon than a sneaky, deadly virus against the US.
To defeat that perfect weapon you would need active, deliberate and ongoing coordination between every single American *and* between all local governments, agencies and the central government and its own agencies.
That's why it's a perfect weapon, because it cannot be defeated by America as it exists in the real world. Claiming that President Hillary would have done better conveniently elides the fact that uh she did not win, and she didn't win because of the way America is (dis)organized.
The virus has revealed the complete shambles that is America's fast decomposing society: the inequality, the chaotic healthcare "system," the willful incompetence of the anti-government party in charge of governing, the sociopathic selfishness of the anti-mask crowd...
...the systemic racism of the institutions, which have more or less deliberately turned a global pandemic into an opportunity to continue class warfare but by other means – biological class warfare.
A country where elected officials go pontificate on TV about "life is full of risks" to justify forcing people to go back to work and kids to go back to school and get exposed to the deadly virus they more or less willingly failed to control.
A country where people demonstrate against wearing masks and public health lockdowns with machine guns and Dixie flags.
A country where news outlets, Fox News but also social media, spread disinformation about the seriousness of disease and snake oil cures in the name of "free speech."
A country where the President, duly elected and supported by 4 out 10 Americans, recommended people inject themselves with toilet bowl disinfectant.
The only silver lining has been #BlackLivesMatter – the largest social mass movement for equality in the past 50 years.
Another 12-18 months of this will bring American society to its knees, regardless of who wins in the elections fall. I hope that something better rises out of the ruins but I do not expect much.
So that was it.
(makes me wonder: what was the point of all these fabled "innovations" and "entrepreneurship" and stuff if you refuse to have a functional society, or is there something darker at work at here, that all the "innovation" is in fact predicated on social dysfunction?)
(the other thing I have learned is that social democracy has demonstrated its resilience and superiority to anything America has to offer, it's not even close)
