Here’s my view on this school reopening malarkey: I’m a teacher, I teach students with hearing loss, I teach communication! There’s no better way than face to face, but... 1/8 https://twitter.com/atrupar/status/1280582029990604800">https://twitter.com/atrupar/s...
It’s not safe in a country with 50,000+ new cases a day. I won’t go into the ins and outs of that, that’s another post. But, what are the reasons for sending kids back? They need face to face to learn and they need social interaction. 2/8
Well, social is hard. I have one daughter at home, she hasn’t seen a friend in the flesh for months and that was her in a car, the other waving and chatting from the lawn. She does however have daily interactions via FaceTime and messages, in the beginning... 3/8
She had movie nights online, that’s happening less which is sad, but she does play games with friends while FaceTiming so some interaction. Let’s talk about education, well, that’s a construct we created. You’re worried about your kid missing a year of school? 4/8
Well, they’re not, they are still learning online, not as effective, but they are still learning. How will that impact them? Well, everyone their age is in the same boat, no one has the “edge”. The benchmarks are arbitrary, we made them, so we can change them. 5/8
Do I mean dumb down the curriculum, no way?! But stream line it and figure out things that we don’t need. Create opportunities for students to work on projects online together, be creative (teachers are one of the most creative professionals around, let them show it!) 6/8
Make learning interactive, different, new and engaging. Let students learn at their pace and the things they are interested in. Make it rigorous but fair. Give teachers the chance to show us how it could be so much better. I have many other ideas, but I just need to get this 7/8
Out there. Schools are not daycares. Schools are not for convenience, if you don’t have the well being and education of children truly at the heart of your decisions then you’re doing it wrong. I would LOVE to see my kids in real life. I’d rather know they were safe though. 8/8
