/1 Local journalism is hard (& often thankless) work. Reporters slog through endless meetings & records looking for gems — stories that make a difference. They get attacked from every direction, and too often, important stories fall on deaf ears.
2/ But there are also those moments when that hard work has a real impact.
Over the last few weeks and months @newsobserver journalists have done just that day after day.

Highlights:
3/ @vizjourno’s photos of armed protesters affiliated with a white supremacist group grabbing lunch at a Subway went viral. His work was cited in senators’ calls for them to ban guns inside stores in open carry states. Subway announced that change today. https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/article244085252.html
4/ @DBattagliaNC and @dankanenando raised questions about an undisclosed death of a Forsyth County inmate. We filed a petition to release video of the events that led to John Neville’s death. The hearing is next week, but today the DA announced charges. https://www.newsobserver.com/news/state/north-carolina/article244070427.html
5/ @_lucysherman noticed a last-minute provision added to a bill that passed after midnight on the last day of the #ncleg session. It would have shielded records from death investigations. Her reporting (w/others) sparked protests and a governor’s veto. https://www.newsobserver.com/news/politics-government/article244026502.html
6/ Reporter @Anna_M_Johnson worked for months investigating allegations of sexual assault and misconduct by Raleigh City Council member Saige Martin.
Two hours after the story published, Martin resigned. https://www.newsobserver.com/article243765427.html

7/ I could go on and on.
Day after day, our journalists fight to tell stories about the local impact of COVID, systemic racism and inequality, issues with police and gov’t accountability and so much more.
They know that shining a light in a dark corner can change history.

I’m so damned proud of this whole team and grateful that I get to work alongside each one of them.
They make a difference in our community and state, and you can too by supporting them.
