/5 Ubuntu/Hunhu/Botho is a unique African term that calls on us to respect others, be fair, compassionate and empathetic. There has been a lot of chatter about the lack of Ubuntu among the supporters of Nelson Chamisa who chased Thoko Khupe from a funeral this week.
/5 We all know that in our African culture, there are no invitations for a funeral and everyone including witches are welcome to attend. Chasing anyone from a funeral goes against our values but are there any exceptions?
/5 I argue that it is also Ubuntu not to attend a funeral where your presence may not be welcome. This is the reason why "small-houses" are discouraged from attending funerals of their lovers and murder suspects should stay away from their "victims" funerals.
/5 Funerals are by nature very emotional moments. It is unwise to inject oneself in a situation where your presence is likely to inflame the situation. Ubuntu entails us to respect the feelings of others. If they are likely to be unhappy in your presence, stay away.
/5 I wish Thoko Khupe would have shown Ubuntu by not travelling to Masvingo. Given the specific limits to funeral attendees, she should have shown Ubuntu by staying away so that those who are really close to NC have the opportunity to console him without any distraction.
