Joe Gomez is so erratic when not on top form. It seems like almost all CBs who end up at top PL clubs have a Kompany type profile instead of a Terry profile
Top athletes with an intercepting style (come off their ‘line’ early to duel before the ST receives to feet or aerially).
For example: Gomez, Lovren, Mustafi, Sokratis, Luiz, Stones, Otamendi, Sonyucu.
It must be because top teams with a high line and heavily prioritising for speed to run back with the modern attacker; over jockeying and blocking skills. + these players grow up as pseudo DMs not CBs
Key to having a good central defence these days seems to be to either play back 3 so at least 1 CB will be covering the others going off their line
or find a rare CB with traditional jockeying and blocking skills and the tactical adaptability to hang back.
VVD, Mertesacker, Evans
I mean this is how CB pairs have always worked more or less, stopper/sweeper but it’s so rare to see CBs at top PL clubs who want to be the one covering. It’s quite strange.
It’s actually harder to do what modern CBs and its amazing when they do keep winning it high. Least PL teams can do is find off-their-line CBs who can 100% win duels and not foul or lose the flight the ball. It’s hilarious how many of them it happens to. (Arsenal CBs, Lovren)
