WHY THIS SONG ISNT JUST A SONG AND THE BACKSTORY TO THE WORD CHOLO: IN LATINX AND CHICANX CULTURE 🇲🇽
hello before you come for me in any way shape or form me, myself am i Latinx & Chicanx person. and i have every right to speak on this topic and i have done my research to EDUCATE non latinx & chicanx people
as of recent tiktok has created the trend; lean like a cholo challenge, from the artist down aka kilo using his infamous song lean like a cholo. which debuted in 2007 and has been loved by the latinx community do this day
KEY WORDS TO KNOW BEFORE WE BEGIN:

LATINX: a gender neutral neologisms to refer to people of Latin America cultural or ethnic identity in the united states (plural Latinx)

Chicano/Chicana/Chicanx: is a chosen identity for people of Mexican descent living in the United States
CHICANX ORGINS:

1940s-1950s: Chicanx was used as a classist term (class discrimination) of derision despite it being already being adopted by panchucos to Anglo-American society.
1960s-1970s: Chicanx was a widely reclaimed word used to express political empowerment, ethnic solidarity, and pride of being indigenous descent, diverging from the assimilationist Mexican American identity +
Many Chicanx youth in barrios rejected cultural assimilation into whiteness and embraced pachuco/a and cholo/a identities as counterculturals symbols of resistance.
In simpler terms: THE SUBCULTURE CHOLO/AS WERE CREATED SO WE AS A LATINX CULTURE WOULDNT SUCCUMB TO WHITEWASHING AND ITS A SLAP TO THE FACE TO WHITEWASHING
Cholos/Cholas originated in Los Angeles and they have a particular way dressing and acting due to its previous roots
AND EVEN SO WE STILL FACE DISCRIMINATON

Cholo/a youth endure hyper-criminalization because they are stereotyped and equated with criminal behavior and gang activity, even though this is not a necessary precondition of being a cholo/a.

IN CONCLUSION: we as latinx chicanx people dont appreciate the fact that this sound and dance is being used so white people can capitalize on something else we created to fight back against oppression
