The summer of 2017 saw him appoint Harry Redknapp with a £1.75m contract and then sack him after ten games, having just signed 14 players for £23m.
Dong tried to sign highly rated Bristol City duo Joe Bryan and Aden Flint for a combined £5m.

A bid of £13m was also rejected for Croatian World Cup finalist Domagoj Vida.

Deals for several Seria A midfielders all fell through as well before a panic attempt to land Alex Song.
Dong then appointed Steve Cotterill and said he was the man to take Blues to the Premier League. He turned out to be the most unlikable manager in history and Blues were last at Christmas.

After a rare Blues win, Cotterill was asked why they didn’t win 8-0.
From @TheAthleticUK - Dong was furious a Blues player pulled his hamstring and demanded a member of staff to stop that happening. Rang Cotterill early on a Sunday morning telling him to get to the Manchester derby to discuss tactics as well.
Dong is being sued by ex-Barcelona & Real Madrid midfielder Figo for not paying wages at his Chinese football academy.
Despite mounting debt, Dong’s salary increased from £170k-300k between 2018-2019. On recent accounts, there is also a £47k loan payment to Dong, which was not repaid, as well as an outstanding CCJ payment.
After splashing the cash during Redknapp’s tenure (under Dong’s supervision) Blues were embargoed and deducted nine points, dropping from just outside the play offs, to fighting relegation, yet again.
Garry Monk was sacked in June 2019, after galvanising the Club as a whole and bringing a long lost positivity back because his relationship with Dong took a turn. A similar decision to the Gary Rowett sacking which saw Blues just survive relegation on the last day.
Assistant manager Pep Clotet was then appointed as a ‘caretaker head coach’.

According to @TheAthleticUK, he would tell Clotet and staff to omit players from the squad because he and the board ‘hate them’.
Dong gave Blues players and staff new iPhones as presents for celebrating the Chinese New Year - which the players and staff were later taxed on.
Furthermore, Dong built himself an office at the training ground to allow him to oversee training. It’s rumoured he moved memorabilia such as the League Cup from St.Andrews to his Wast Hills office. He has recently been pictured on the training pitches in full training gear.
