THREAD @ProjectLincoln:
103 days ago @realDonaldTrump said we'd reopen the economy by Easter. 100 days ago he said if we hit 100k Americans dead then he would have “done a very good job.” 100 days, 132k dead &48m unemployed Americans later he's still saying he’s doing a great job
This is what ‘American Carnage’ looks like. This is what the most impotent and inept president in the history of our country has wrought.
And because Republican governors in Arizona, Texas and Florida followed Trump’s instructions to ignore HIS OWN CDC they are on the verge of experiencing the same surge of Covid cases that New York experienced four months ago.
This is what’s happening in Houston Texas
This is what’s happening in Arizona
Trump claims that “99 percent” of coronavirus cases are “totally harmless.” But for all of the claimed harmlessness of this virus, hospitals are reaching capacity in counties throughout Arizona, Texas and Florida - w/hospitalizations projected to double in the next 2 weeks.
Our testing capacity is far below what it should be & what other countries are capable of. The US does 14 tests per a confirmed case. Meanwhile, countries that have gotten this right — Taiwan, South Korea, New Zealand — do 70 to 270 tests per a confirmed case.
Trump has failed to do anything to expand testing to this degree, where it is widely distributed and with no barriers.
This is also why the US’s confirmed positives for Covid are far below what the actual number is. We just hit 3 million confirmed infections. But Dr. Fauci has said the real number is likely 10x higher, and the CDC director says upwards of 24 million Americans have been infected.
Est of # people currently infectious w/Covid in battleground states:
•FL-500K people/2.3% of FL pop currently infectious
•AZ-220K people/3% of AZ pop currently infectious
•TX-416K people/1.4% of TX pop currently infectious
•GA-150k people/1.3% of GA pop currently infectious
Here are where hospitals are already reaching capacity:

•Florida - 56 intensive care units in FL hospitals throughout more than 21 counties have reached capacity -- including in Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. Another 35 hospitals have less than 10% ICU beds available.
•AZ-90% of ICU beds are occupied. 3.3k currently hospitalized. Pima County has only 5-10 beds available some days. Test results take 6-7 days to process & FEMA denied MULTIPLE requests by Phoenix mayor to set up a large-scale test site as they’ve done in other major cities.
•TX-More than 9.2k currently hospitalized. 10 of 12 hospitals in Rio Grande Valley have reached capacity. 10 of TX's trauma service regions have more than 70% of their beds filled, w/6 regions reporting beds are at least 80% occupied.
Each of these governors said that the virus was being overblown -- that what happened to New York would never happen in OUR states. They did not implement mask requirements, they did not implement contact tracing, and they still do not have adequate testing capacity.
And now, hundreds of thousands are getting sick, being hospitalized, and dying because Donald Trump convinced these Republican governors that governing by incompetence and adhering to Trumpism was more important than saving American lives.
This didn’t have to happen.
