the body positivity movement was ruined by fat acceptance - a thread
i know “what is this bitch who cries in front of the mirror and won’t eat cheese bcos they have an ed” have to say about this
well coming from a person who was in obese class I on the bmi scale i have a whole lot to say about what fat acceptance has done to me and the ed community in general
as a child i grew up emotionally eating and dealing with BED and i kept getting bigger and bigger and by senior year of hs i was 216 lbs (98kgs) and that was because of fat acceptance i accepted that i was fat and kept thinking binging was okay bcos im beautiful no matter what
NO! that’s not okay and thats why fat acceptance and body positivity to me will forever promote obesity bcos there are ppl online behind screens seeing obese ppl on runways, cat walks, red carpets and thinking that eating as much as they do is okay. it isn’t
yes, you can make the argument fat isn’t unhealthy and i slightly agree. I never had any health problems due to my size but that was then if i kept going and getting bigger then i would’ve had health problems so in turn being fat is unhealthy.
body positivity should solely focus on those with disabilities that in turn harms them in social and workplace situations. yes you get stared at and talked about for being fat but there literally had to be laws created for disabled people to not be discriminated against in +
the workplace. the disabled community can’t change the disabilities they have but a fat person can lose weight period, point, blank.
the way fat acceptance has harmed the ed community is by making it seem like “i skipped a meal so now im anorexic” take meghan trainor as example it’s allowing ppl to take eds as a joke and they are not
this has lead many people to infiltrate ed platforms despite only being on diets and claiming to be anorexic. yes other eds exist but anorexia is predominantly known and by definition a “restrictive disorder” don’t say you have anorexia when you don’t its not right
educate yourself further on ednos, osfed, BED, bulimia and then come back bcos what ever ed you have is valid but don’t say you have anorexia when thats false
body positivity also promotes poor eating choices and binging. i personally dealt with binging for 9 years and i started to have poor body image as i do now but in a completely different context. however due to fat acceptance i stopped feeling that for a short time.
because of fat acceptance i made little change to my lifestyle, i had two serving food, i ate fast food regularly, i ate pastries regularly, i always had candy stashed and ate it any time i felt. I shouldve at least been exercising regularly and eating these things in moderation
however i was not because “im beautiful at any size.” which is all in all a true statement to some but not everyone and people are entitled to how they feel if someone doesn’t want to be around or with someone larger they have every right to feel that way
so stop throwing the word fatphobic around like a toy. just because people engage in diet culture, exercise, healthy foods or diets, or want to lose weight doesn’t make them fatphobic. that want to love themselves just like an obese person and if that takes losing weight so be it
okay anyways end thread thats all i have to say abt that yes it’s all over the place but this has been on my mind a lot lately so yh
