i just finished reading 'histories' chapter of 'why i'm no longer talking to white people about race' by Reni Eddo-Lodge and i think that the issue of racism is the britain should be spoken about more because now, when you hear the word 'racism', you think about the us.
it is only one chapter but i already feel a little bit more educated. racism in britain is an important topic to me since i live here and i want to know how it looked and still looks here.
white people back in the day didn't have any interest in learning about Black history and treated Black people as slaves, treating them as a 'property' (what's such a berserk because how can you treat a human like a thing?), and put into an awful labour with awful conditions.
white people thought only about themselves and their own well-being what can be seen even now when some say that all lives matter. just like Reni said - 'how often history would have to repeat itself before we choose to tackle the underlying problems'.
later, during ww1, Black people were a help to the british soldiers yet they were still treated bad - e.g. while travelling to the europe, some of them even died from exposure because of the lack of appropriate clothing what led to catching a cold.
even if a Black soldier was the highest-ranked sepoy, he was still lower in the hierarchy than the lowest-ranked white british soldier. it still happens. no matter how educated or how good to a society a Black person is, they are still treated worse just bc of their SKIN COLOUR.
Black people couldn't get employed, couldn't get a flat or a house, yet there will still be white people who will say that reverse racism exist. it fucking doesn't. you can get a job easily. a flat. a house. you see white people everywhere - magazines, tv, etc. they don't.
i was really surprised when my city was spoken about in this book because i didn't really expect it but it's my fault that i didn't educated myself on that subject earlier.
Black people were hunted by white men in notting hill in 1958 who called themselves 'nword hunters'. Guy Bailey was supposed to have an interview at the city's bus service - he turned up and found out that it was cancelled because the manager discovered Guy's Black.
every Black person seemed suspicious to the police. even children. John Power, his father, and his sister were assaulted by the police who accused Power and his family of the assault on the officers. white people didn't respect Black people culture.
white people considered Black people unemployed. uneducated. they didn't see future for them in the country which was already an 'over-crowded island'. Cherry Groce's house was raided, she was shot in the chest bc police looked for her son who didn't even live w/ her at the time.
Floyd Jarrett was arrested for suspected theft on a car just because his tax disc had expired. police searched his house and injured Jarrett's mother by pushing her what resulted in her fall onto a small table. later that day, she died because of a heart attack.
so, really if you think that you as a white previledged person have problems in the current society, please think twice about it. it's only one chapter of a book that i read yet look at how much information i got and how much of a difference between races it showed.
i guess i'm gonna be updating this thread within each next chapter i will read because as a white person, i want not only educate myself but other white people around me as well since i consider it hugely important.
i may not post many posts about Black history of racism on my instagram now but currently, i'm taking education personal. i'm watching documentaries, films, shows, and reading books and it really helps me in gaining more of this important knowledge. peace & love.
