As old cranky activists who've been around a while, we feel like the St. Paul Principles are pretty important, including respect for diversity of tactics, separation of tactics by time and space, and keeping critiques internal to the movement, which is hard to do on twitter. 1/
In that vein, it's generally not great to denounce other protesters as cops, but there are problematic behaviors that can be called out as such, without raising questions of police collaboration. 2/
in our current capacity as reporters, we heard and saw a lot of confusion on the ground near the JC last night between the hours of 9-11pm among folks showing up for the Summer Taylor vigil/night of rage YLF event, and folks who had made a habit of showing up to the JC. 3/
So in hopes of clarifying some of that, here's a timeline:
By 3pm Monday, PNYLF had posted a call for a Night Of Rage in memorial of Summer Taylor on instagram and twitter.
~1pm Tuesday, Portland Protest Bureau used a newly created IG account to post their call for a sit-in 4/
PNWYLF’s event was called for 10pm at the justice center. PPB’s was called for the courthouse, from 9pm-1am. When our reporters arrived about 9:30, folks in Protest Bureau hoodies were leading crowd to courthouse steps for a sit in. Many YLF folks were present for this as well 5/
At about 10:20, folks in black with this Summer Taylor banner show up by the courthouse, and stand quietly, joining a crowd lining 3rd. Folks in street tend to be standing, folks on the courthouse sidewalk are primarily sitting. This looks like one demo at this point. 6/
Between 10:30 & 10:40, with sit-in ongoing, large number of folks begin moving to Chapman, in front of the JC, for the Summer Taylor memorial event. Around the same time, the speaker on the sit-in PA system mentions an agreement with Portland Police to keep the sidewalk clear 7/
By 10:50 a group is gathered in Chapman, beginning to hand out and light candles. By 11:00 there's a lot of candles lit. By 11:14 sit-in folks have announced they are not RCJ, and have announced their twitter & IG handles. Chapman folks are beginning to muster for march. 8/
Shortly thereafter, folks from the sit-in approached the ongoing candlelight vigil. By 11:30, there are some arguments between sit-in folks and those already present at the vigil in Chapman. By 11:40, folks from the sit-in are yelling at vigil attendees on megaphones. 9/
At 11:45pm Federal LEOs rush Chapman park up to 4th and then withdraw dropping 2 really loud flashbangs
Hope that helps a bit.
