tbh i think part of the problem w people trying to jump off dnd is that dnd has created a culture based around the idea that there should just be One Game that you play. that’s why people are jumping to quest: it’s similar enough & feels more devoid of context than most indies
it’s rlly good for wotc’s business if u see a ttrpg as smth ur supposed to pick once & become deeply invested in, bc dnd is built on the idea that it can do anything, even tho it super can’t, & it has a lot of kinks & crevices to get stuck in.
idt quest will last bc the whole point is it’s smoothed down dnd. dnd w/o the struggle to create story against its system. but that struggle is a feature, not a bug. it’s the thing that makes u feel like u couldn’t play anything else. a smooth surface can’t stick to anything.
there’s never going to be a game that can ‘replace’ dnd, bc:
(a) dnd is built on colonialism, bioessentialism, etc.
(b) so much of what makes dnd stick is what makes other games like it hard to get into.
so if ur trying to move on rn, here is my advice:
don’t try to stick urself to smth else. enjoy rolling around on the smooth surfaces of other games. a bunch of games, that don’t take the same work to get to the good stuff. u might slip once or twice, but we’re here to help u up!
this is a weird metaphor, but i think it works??? is that just me???? welcome to the roller rink of indie rpgs, friend! hope u enjoy ur stay! here’s a big thread of cool games u should check out https://twitter.com/jaceaddax/status/1276528772594966530
