They keep stressing how children aren't at high-risk for the virus, and possibly not even carriers. But they're ignoring how many adults will be in the school buildings interacting with e/o. The kids do not teach themselves.
I work in a school - not as a teacher - and even with the many many many many precautions being put in place, I am not in a rush to go back because my health isn't great and I have a senior citizen at home.
And trust me, I see what my sister is having to manage with a job and having a special needs child. I get the necessity of having professionals managing your child's education. It's a ton of work. But health has to prevail over convenience.
I have cared for my nephew, who has autism, in-person for several hours a day for years, and even I'm having difficulty with our daily one-hour Zoom hangouts to play games or do educational play. He has a one-on-one aide at school for a reason.
Hybrid schedules are probably the best solution to balance on-site exposure with students' needs. This has to be something for school districts to decide, with input from staff, public health & safety experts, and local government.
NOT the federal government, which has taken a hands-off approach to HELPING, but wants to strong-arm districts in an effort to shore up the struggling economy. Trust me, the people who work in schools also need a strong economy, but have to be well enough to partake in it.
I didn't plan for this to be a thread, but it's frustrating to see DeVos, who has done zilch to assist public schools and knows even less about educating, playing the bully when everyone knows her track record of "concern" for public school children.
ALL of the views expressed in this thread are my own & in fairness, my district is bending over backwards to provide a safe environment for in-school instruction to resume in the fall. But they are doing it w/state & local guidance. Not one-size-fits-all federal demands.
I hope we all find the best possible way through this. Protecting our health and the health of all around us has to be the guiding principle. The rest can be dealt with. Stay safe. Think of others. Wear a mask. The end.
