This is good

I don't know that the people who wrote that letter were ever even truly cancelled since they, you know, still run a ton of media

but this is a good start to discussing the issue https://twitter.com/Phillipasoo/status/1280890450778501120
If you're talking about "cancel culture," do you mean:

- Facing monetary/employment consequences
- Facing internet vitriol
- Receiving death threats
- A campaign and documentary being created to force the justice system to actually at least pretend to bring you to justice
Because #'s 1-3 are faced by folks of all walks of life but especially members of marginalized communities for just belonging to said communities and speaking out about their mistreatment.

#4 is the new-ish one, but tbh not really...
Documentaries followed by campaigns calling for police investigations to be reopened...this isn't new. The internet format is new, but this action itself isn't.
So let's stop breathing life into this idea of "cancel culture."

It does exist but the thing is, it always has, just under different names. And it absolutely impacts marginalized communities WITHOUT jobs at that old magazine more.
So call it what it is:

They're not mad at "cancel culture."

They're mad that marginalized communities are using the tools that are typically used against THEM to protect their own communities.
If you don't want people to have to turn to "cancel culture" to bring their community abusers to some sort of justice,

then create a justice system that actually addresses their pain.

Otherwise, get out of the way.
Like seriously, online vitriol has existed since the internet was publicly accessible.

But literal white supremacists/nationalists are just getting deplatformed just this WEEK.
Seriously https://twitter.com/rebeccawatson/status/1280901089831739392
The entirety of "Unsolved Mysteries" and most of unsolved True Crime media is exactly that -- documentary-style content asking people to share tips and spread the word to bring serial killers to justice. https://twitter.com/HappyFeminist/status/1280910518006558722
- White supremacists & their apologists no longer having platforms on which to organize their violence
- Legal protections for marginalized communities
- Underrepresented people using platforms to call for justice
- Literal victims begging for recognition of the acts against them
If this is "Cancel Culture" to you, then we have beef. https://twitter.com/HappyFeminist/status/1280913789400092672
But if you want to address *online bullying* & social platforms' inability to address credible threats?

Then boy oh boy, do I have news for you:

We're asking for the same thing. Just that you maybe don't realize that you've contributed to that bullying.

And that's on you.
"but they're just as mean"

stop otherizing a collective of people who share nothing but frustration at your bigotry.

also https://twitter.com/HappyFeminist/status/1280614928957702148
and this twitter update just happened YESTERDAY https://twitter.com/jaredlholt/status/1280675865043570693
Anyway: Deplatform bigots.

It makes a difference. https://twitter.com/oliverdarcy/status/1280673161902796800
Just gonna keep on cus I'm mad, actually.

What happened to Janet Jackson? The D̶i̶x̶i̶e̶ Chicks? https://twitter.com/maplecocaine/status/1280526301095497729
- Sinead: Spoke against the Catholic Church/Pope
- The Clinton Scandal: ML was the sacrificial lamb for both parties to shame a sex act
- Janet: Her boob was on screen for a split second
- Chicks: Dared to speak against Bush

Oh hey they're all women weird
It's not only women but like...come on.
Also let's talk about how there were so few trans people in mainstream media for so long that there's a chunk of society that thinks that Trans rights is a brand new thing.

What's that called? Preemptive cancelling?
Those who are confused about what "cancelling" means haven't followed its trajectory as a term.

1st "cancelling" meant using your small platform to take abusers to task
2-"cancelling" meant this online pile-on for nonsense
Now "cancelling" is a misnomer for criticizing bigots
I feel that this video is mostly about Stage 2:
So lessons learned, continued:
- Deplatform bigots
- Don't use terms you don't understand to play victim
- Don't tone police marginalized communities with little to no power
