It's week two of our two week summer hiatus and while I'm excited to get back on Monday I'm slowly losing my mind. I am passing the time making a wish list of SECOND CHANCE THEATER sketches THREAD!
For those who don't know, SECOND CHANCE THEATER is an insanely popular segment on our show in which we stage SNL sketches that were cut from dress. It's so popular we have done it 6 times in 1008 shows.
I was on SNL for 12.5 years. It's not something I like to talk about much, but I assure you it's true. ON TO MY WISH LIST!!!!
GABE KAPLAN. Will Ferrell plays a man who loves and dresses like Gabe Kaplan. He overhears people talking about how Gabe Kaplan came into to office earlier that day. The entire sketch is his disbelief that no one came to get him.
GRIEF COUNSELORS. Wiig and Charles Barkley are grief counselors hired to cheer up an office who lose a co-worker. At one point they put a pair of wind up chattering teeth on a desk and ask people to watch it while they take a break. Barkley has piano keys on his sleeve.
Every time I think about this sketch I wish that Wiig and Barkley had done 50 movies together.
TOY COLLECTORS. Horatio and Fred are toy collectors who only speak Spanish. Natalie Portman is a bilingual comic book store employee who helps them order figurines of, among others, Hanson Brothers, Todd McFarlane Spawn and Kiss.
She was so good I assumed Natalie spoke Spanish but then I found out she didn't. Turns out she's just excellent at her job.
HAIR HEADS. Jude Law is the proud owner of a fine crystals store. On opening night, the celebration is interrupted by two hair heads (Wiig, Forte) who, if frightened, will destroy everything on the shelves. What is a hair head? You would have to see it to understand.
Hair Heads was a three part sketch that (spoiler alert) probably cost thousands of dollars worth of crystals and glass. Jude Law was EXCELLENT in this sketch.
BREAKAWAY CHAIR FACTORY. John Goodman plays the manager at a breakaway chair factory firing Bobby Moynihan. Every time he asks Bobby to take a seat the chair breaks. And if you think that gets old fast, THE DRESS AUDIENCE AGREED WITH YOU!
Lotta chairs broke in that sketch but you know who didn't break? John Goodman. He's a big laugher, but when the cameras roll - iceman. Also, remembering he was in GABE KAPLAN too. Moral is - if you got a dumb idea that the audience won't go for, get Goodman to ride shotgun.
Because Goodman will bring the same integrity to your terrible sketch that he brings to all his work. Legend.
