DeVos: "It's not a matter of if schools should reopen it's a matter of how." Attacks Fairfax County (VA) Public Schools which is offering all-at-home or 2 days/wk in person learning for students in the fall. "Their springtime attempt at distance learning was a disaster," she adds
DeVos: "Schools must fully open and be fully operational and how that happens is best left to education and community leaders... Fully open and fully operational means that students need a full school year or more... It will look different depending on where you are."
Pence: "Opening up schools is the right thing for our kids so they don't fall behind academically and also so that children who are in need of services, special needs children, children with mental health issues, nutrition needs have the support that they receive at the schools."
Now Labor Sec Eugene Scalia arguing schools need to reopen so parents can have a normal work schedule. "One study has suggested that if we closed all our schools and daycare for just a month ... the impact on US productivity would be on the order of $50 billion."
I know a lot of working parents and some working parent teachers who are having a very hard time right now.

It's still a little crazy listening to this focus on we should re-open schools so kids can learn & adults can work for the economy, full stop.
Azar: "Reopening schools comes with risk, but there are risks to keeping kids at home. At home, kids aren't benefiting from social stimulation, they may be falling behind in learning, they may be more vulnerable to abuse..."
Pence, asked if WH will be ok with some schools not reopening, says that "while we hope every school in America is able to open this fall," there may be some areas with outbreaks that need to cut down school days "and we will be very respectful of that."
