The mark of seeing Islam as an ideology rather than a faith is preferring people who validate your political Islamism (even when they're not religious) over devout people who do not share your ideology
Between 2011 and 2014, I resolved to read, in the original Arabic, every major history book documenting the first 250 years of Islam. Before I did this I would have self-identified as an Islamist. I wasn't after.
I'm a committed Muslim and my faith is very important to me (you certainly can't fake devotion when your very neck is on the line). I have read Islamic tradition deeply and widely (and that means not only the Sunni tradition that I was born into)
Yet my faith is regularly called into question by those who know little about me other than that I don't share their Salafist-Islamist ideology and orthodoxy.
