“What we’re not going to do!”: A THREAD ON THE NEW BARE MINIMUM (COMPLETE OVERHAUL)
It absolutely should not be the job of Black and nbPOC people in precarious freelancer positions to fix the sector's race issue.
Especially when there are already numerous engagement roles in the sector, where people are able to have a secure income and benefits, that are failing because they aren't addressing how their wider organisations are not welcoming to Black and nbPOC.
We are seeing people of colour who have been in the sector longer than we have, veering towards wanting to appease white-led organisations/institutions in their attempts to address issues of racial inequality.
WAARU believes that for real change to take place, we cannot centre continue centering white people - who must make space for Black and nbPOC to lead the way.
Even worse, we are very aware of non-black POC who are using the momentum from the Black Lives Matter Movement as nothing more than an opportunity for personal gain. We see you treating Black People and other non-black POC as your ‘competition’.
The current support for racial justice could not have happened without #BLM - do not continue to pretend otherwise.
