This is probably going to cause a lot of controversy, so please read the full thread first.
I believe that both N& #39;Golo Kanté and Jorginho should leave in the summer, as they don& #39;t suit Lampard& #39;s style of play.
I believe that both N& #39;Golo Kanté and Jorginho should leave in the summer, as they don& #39;t suit Lampard& #39;s style of play.
First off, Lampard is looking for a lone defensive midfielder who can operate as a true number 6: someone who likes to dictate the play from deep but can also win the ball comfortably, especially when the full-backs push up the pitch and when the team is caught out on the break.
Lampard needs that type of player because he wants to play with two free 8s, even if I disagree with the way he uses them (he prefers to play with two attacking Playmakers instead of including a ball carrier option, which we have in Gilmour x Kovacic x RLC).
Second, while Jorginho (28) is a player who& #39;s used to playing as a lone DM and has the abilities to dictate the play, he struggles to comfortably win the ball back. Lampard really wants a destroyer at DM, so that& #39;s why Jorginho& #39;s barely played since the restart.
I really like Jorginho& #39;s abilities, but he needs to be in a style of play that not only gets the best out of him, but also makes him dictate the play without having to rely on him for ball recoveries. Juventus would work but Italian clubs are in financial difficulties atm.
Third, Kanté (29) is the exact opposite of Jorginho: he likes to win the ball, but even though he& #39;s a ball carrier too he struggles to dictate the play from deep and he& #39;s definitely not a lone DM player (Lampard only plays him there because of his ball winning abilities).
Not only that, Kanté thrives when playing in a double pivot, not in a midfield three (Leicester& #39;s 4-4-2 and Conte& #39;s 3-4-3 primarily). So in terms of formation and player roles, you just won& #39;t be getting the best out of him if he stays. PSG is probably the best option tactically.
Fourth, in terms of replacements, you just need someone like Claude Makelele to slot in at CDM: someone who can protect the defence, win the ball and dictate the play from deep. Declan Rice is a example of that, Wilfred Ndidi is another.
