Thread with lots of graphs and maps:
Today we released our @BennettInst Townscapes report on the South West of England so here is a thread about about local economies in the South West and #COVID19 looking at some of the wider analysis of the region. https://www.bennettinstitute.cam.ac.uk/publications/townscapes-south-west/

Firstly there is this @resfoundation piece which highlights the South West as the region experiencing the most furloughed workers and the highest amount of people losing hours/ pay since lockdown measures were enforced:

The same piece finds that local authorities in the region have experienced high increases in their unemployment claimant rate since the beginning of lockdown.

Building on their work I analysed this data at town-level and found some of the largest increases in claimant rates happened in towns in the South West like Penzance, Newquay and Ilfracombe:
The @centrefortowns produced a report which goes into great detail about towns' economic vulnerability to #COVID19. Their index finds many towns in the South West are particularly vulnerable:

https://www.centrefortowns.org/reports/covid-19-and-our-towns
Part of the @centrefortowns and @resfoundation's reports analyse the importance to towns of hospitality sectors.
Building on that, @michaelkenny_ and I plotted something similar against a measure of deprivation and found towns in the South West stood out

And in terms of health vulnerability too the South West stands out. This @TheIFS report highlights the older demographics of the region which also have high levels of underlying conditions.

Spending data published by @tortoise powerfully illustrates how small towns in the South West may have had particularly large hits to their high-streets since #COVID19

While this map made by @tmsells, @CentreforCities shows that the % of people furloughed in the South West local authorities varies quite heavily:

The @EconObservatory has two great pages looking at the economic impact of #COVID19 on local economies. Both are absolutely worth a read:

Worth a read too is our @BennettInst @Cambridge_Uni report on the welfare of towns in the South West. We highlight the large inequalities within the region and have some interesting findings about the provision of public transport there too: https://www.bennettinstitute.cam.ac.uk/publications/townscapes-south-west/
