Having a portfolio website is one of the best decisions you can make as a developer.

It provides a lot of benefits and helps you stand out amongst the crowd.

Most people neglect their portfolio or don't have one at all.

That's a missed opportunity.

Here's why 🧵👇
Stand out for recruiters/clients

A great portfolio is the best way to make a good impression.

Show off what's important in a way you control.

It's far better than relying on a resume.
You also don't have to rely on their technical knowledge.

Do they know GitHub? Can they read your code?
Probably not.

Present yourself in the best way you can. Don't make assumptions.

Don't make them work hard to see how great you are.

Make it easy.
It gives you a side project you actually care about.

We've all had projects which we thought would be great, but only half-finished.

A portfolio has a substantial impact on your future.

So you won't get bored building it.
It will challenge your skills.

You can go as unique as you like with your portfolio.

The more unique it is, the more it will stand out so you have a good reason to test yourself.
You'll continually want to improve.

A side project which is has tangible value, and that you actually care about means you will always be looking for ways to improve it.

It won't get lost as soon as it goes online.
It provides you with a base for future improvement.

Want to change jobs?
Want to become a freelancer?
Want to start blogging?
Want to sell a product?

Now you have a platform where you can do that.

With only a few changes you can get started.
Don't underestimate the power of having a portfolio website.

It doesn't have to take much effort. A great portfolio can just be a single page.

It's all about showing off your skills, and you don't have to have lots of pages to do that.
I built my portfolio specifically for these reasons.

It's gained a lot on interest from the dev community here on twitter (thank you!) as well as a lot of interest from potential clients.
