Thread: Josh Allen finished 2019 with 109 att / 510 yds / 9 TDs. Allen is a sneaky athlete for a guy that’s 6’ 5” 238lbs. Defenders underestimate his athletic ability due to his sheer size. He provides the Bills with a skillset that makes them difficult to defend in the redzone
Jamal Adams comes in free on the blitz but underestimates how quick Allen is. Allen sells the throw till the last second and is able to escape up the middle
One example of how they use his mobility in the red zone. The Bills run play action to get the defense moving to the left, and Allen towards the right. This holds the defense for an extra step and also gives Allen two throwing options on the backside if the run isn’t open
QB sweep to the left side, hell of a block by Sweeney to seal the edge. The TE/WR seal the edge to the left, and Morse & Dawkins pull to pave the way for an easy 8 yds on 3rd & 2. It helps to have these kinds of plays in your playbook to stress the defense
Exhibit B in the red zone. Similar play call to the one before, except to the right side. Josh’s ability to run these gives the Bills +1 in the run game with Gore as an additional blocker. Having this advantage is huge in the red zone
His strength, size, & speed make him so difficult to bring down. Usually if Geno Atkins gets his hands on you, you’re done. Josh is able to shake him off, and outrun another two defenders for a first down on a broken play
3rd & 1, you’re not gonna have a prayer at stopping this with your safeties playing deep. If JA can start hitting the deep ball the Bills are gonna be headache to defend on 3rd & short. If the safeties are playing up, take a deep shot to Diggs. If they’re playing back, run for it
0:11 left just outside FG range. Dodges Fletcher Cox, shakes off another arm tackle, and has the awareness to call timeout mid slide after picking up 14 yds to get into FG range. Incredible escapability / awareness at a critical time
The Bills go 5 wide and the Browns come out with exactly zero defenders in the middle of the field. Bold strategy. The more I watch the Bills in the red zone, the more I’m impressed with how Daboll maximizes his players strengths down there
Guys that are this big are not supposed to be this fast & this strong. Allen only ran a 4.7 but when he gets going his game speed looks much quicker. The safety has a shot at him in open field and comes nowhere near making the tackle
This isn’t a designed run but when you don’t put a QB spy on him in the redzone he’s probably gonna take off. The DB sees him coming from a mile away, and just can’t get there fast enough to lay a good hit
“He is, believe it or not, a tough tackle in the open field. He’s a big quarterback, he’s 6’5”, he’s 237 pounds, and he’s not looking to slide.”
3rd & 5, he should be sacked 3 times on this play but he ends up absolutely roasting 2 of them and picking up the first lol
Josh Allen and Saquon Barkley both have 17 rushing TDs since entering the league. This is surprising to me because I don’t remember Allen’s running ability being brought up much at all in the pre-draft process
Allen loved using his legs to pick up chunk plays towards the end of the half when the safeties are defending the deep ball. These types of runs got half/game ending drives going to put them in scoring position
42 yard pickup on a QB sweep. This play is a good example of how he has a tendency to play faster than his 4.7 40, when he gets going towards the end of this play he’s separating from DBs
: I know OCs by nature catch a lot of heat, but I’m a huge Brian Daboll fan. He ends up having 4 receivers towards the right side of the field and running a pin & pull w/ Allen to the left side for an easy 19 yds
I’m not gonna try & defend this, on a deep level it concerns me that this was his subconscious thought process. Reality is, the play ended up being a 20 yd gain setting up a game tying FG. Consider us lucky it was a learning experience early in his career & didn't cost the game
"Honestly this is why his teammates love him though. He is a football player through and through."
