Oak space saver stairs. An intricate project with aesthetics, space considerations and building regulations to adhere to. As a joiner once remarked “it’s easy once you’ve done it”! 1.

The monster 400 year oak came from Bethesda, Wales. It was the hardest tree I’ve ever planked. We fought to cut every board. At one point a mouse jumped out of a knot like Jerry as the saw approached his house. 2.

At the time the sawyer said “what the hell are you going to use this for”. Well for twenty years I didn’t know. Finally it’s time came and here we are. 3.

Where I could I kept the saw marks to remind me of that epic day and the knots, burls, checks and knarl to remind of that ancient giant. After all. There’s a certain corrosion of character in perfection.
