okay but there's a BIG difference between cancelling someone who minorly fucked up once, apologised, learned & never did it again Vs cancelling a billionaire author w a huge platform who repeatedly says things that endanger marginalised communities???
"stop upholding cancel culture" cannot just become a phrase that people in positions of power get to use to avoid all accountability or consequences for their harmful actions???
also, what EXACTLY are we saying counts as participating in "cancel culture"? replying to someone on Twitter? Writing an article that challenges them? Encouraging your followers to send them abuse? again these are all VERY different things.
if someone believes they're being "cancelled" while they sit in their mansion with lifetime financial security, all of their needs met and none of their rights actually being taken away at all (?) what exactly of theirs is being threatened by cancel culture?
ah, right, their ability to say whatever they want without people disagreeing when what they say is racist, transphobic, sexist, fatphobic, ageist or ableist. cool.
I'm not saying that the way the internet holds people accountable is always perfect or always leans towards restorative justice. sometimes people really do just enjoy destroying someone online for sport. but there are SO MANY contributing factors to what is right or wrong here.
power, privilege, platform, intention, willingness to apologise & learn all vary person to person & situation to situation so to paint every instance of "cancel culture" with the same brush is honestly absurd.
"cancel culture is bad" as a blanket statement doesn't work and ignores the complexities of this conversation.
now we've talked about that for a minute you can find ways to support Breonna Taylor's family & demand accountability for her murder here: https://justiceforbreonna.org/
