A thing I should have anticipated but did not: since reopening to the public I have gotten SO MANY questions from parents about early readers and learning how to read. If you& #39;re not re-open yet, take heed! #LibraryLife
If I might suggest, now is not the time to try and talk caregivers out of getting a leveled text. Yes let& #39;s affirm that all books they read with their child are good books, and let& #39;s not add to their stress by contradicting what they& #39;re hearing from schools and teachers.
Some helpful resources for figuring out the level of a text since each publisher uses their own leveling system independent of the leveling systems actually used in schools like DRA and F&P: Scholastic Book Wizard https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/bookwizard/">https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/...
Reading A to Z& #39;s fantastic level correlation chart: https://www.readinga-z.com/learninga-z-levels/level-correlation-chart/">https://www.readinga-z.com/learninga...
But really what I find most helpful is knowing what different books on different levels actually LOOK LIKE. There& #39;s lots of text level indicators/characteristic charts out there, but this is one of my faves: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PCN4E7JWCQUUPK4Wxkw61S_3LqWG51Un/view?usp=drivesdk">https://drive.google.com/file/d/1P...
Also helpful is having a handy dandy quick list of good publishers/series for reading ranges within a specific grade level. For example, Ready to Read& #39;s Ready to Go (their earliest level) is on my go-to list for kindergartners: https://www.readytoread.com/levels.html ">https://www.readytoread.com/levels.ht...
I generally really don& #39;t like how reading levels are used to label & stigmatize children (see http://fpblog.fountasandpinnell.com/a-level-is-a-teacher-s-tool-not-a-child-s-label)">https://fpblog.fountasandpinnell.com/a-level-i... AND parents are picking up a lot of teaching duties right now. Kids have much less access to the "just right" books & supports they had at school.
So, this thread is just to ask that we all try and go a bit beyond generally pointing folks to the early reader section when they need RA help right now. Raising a reader is hard. Parents will much appreciate your extra help and support.
