Most people have seen the George Floyd mural in downtown SLC, but may not know about the other murals alongside him that memorialize Utah victims of police violence. We should learn their names and their stories. Here’s a thread:
Darrien Hunt, 22. Killed by Saratoga Springs PD in September 2014. Police shot him in the back while he was cosplaying an anime character.

Bernardo Palacios, 22. Killed by SLCPD in May 2020. Shot 20+ times in the back, his last words were “Officer, I don’t want to die”

Dillon Taylor, 20. Shot and killed by SLCPD in August 2014. He was unarmed, leaving 7-11 with his brother and cousin.

Bryan Valencia, 28. Shot and killed by Unified PD in March 2020, by an officer without a bodycam. Bryan’s friend Cody Belgard was killed by police in 2018.

Chad Breinholt, 31. Shot and killed by West Valley PD in August 2019 while handcuffed in the station. Just before his murder, an officer said, “You’re about to die, my friend.”

Danielle Willard, 21. Shot and killed by West Valley Police in November 2012. Her family received a $1.4million settlement for her murder.

Patrick Harmon, 50. Shot and killed by SLC PD in August 2017. He was shot in the back after he was pulled over for riding a bicycle without proper lighting.

Zane James, 19. Shot and paralyzed by Cottonwood Heights PD in May 2018. Zane died 3 days after being shot in the back, when he asked to end life support.

Allen Nelson, 44. Killed while being taken into custody by SLC PD in June 2012. An eyewitness testified to police using a Taser on him before his death.

Cody Belgard, 30. Shot in the back and killed by SLCPD in November 2018. He was unarmed and police mistook his cell phone for a gun.

Cindreia Europe, 23. Run over and killed by Unified PD in March 2019. The officer involved had a detailed history of poor driving.

“Unique and naturally gifted,” Cindreia loved to read, was interested in science, and tutored local children.

Bobby Duckworth, 26. Shot and killed by Carbon County PD in September 2019. He had no firearm and was killed by police responding to his own mental health crisis.

These are the murals done as of 7/8. You can see them by the intersection of 300 W and 800 S. I don’t know if any more are going to be added, but there are many more victims of police violence in Utah, and I will add their stories to this thread.
James Barker, 42. Shot and killed by SLC PD in January 2015. He was shot dead by an officer after James attacked him with a plastic snow shovel during a mental health crisis.

Siale Angilau, 25. Killed by a US Marshall in the SLC Federal Courthouse. Shot 4x, 3 in the back, after he ran toward a testifying witness. He had a pen in his hand.

Joey Tucker, 30. Killed by SLCPD in August 2009. He was diabetic and in the middle of a blood-sugar spike when police shot him after failing to pull over.

Jovany Mercardo-Bedolla, 26. Killed by Ogden PD in August 2019. Shot 16 times for carrying a knife in his own driveway.
