This day in 1981, INS Vindhyagiri, last of the Leander/Nilgiri class frigates was Commissioned. Leanders were our first major warship building project, albeit to British design. They served India well even as we subsequently designed & built guided missile frigates & destroyers.
In Sep 19, next gen Nilgiri was launched. 7 powerful guided missile frigates will be inducted over next few years, all designed & built in India. At 6000 tons they will be twice as large as their previous namesakes & many times more powerful. As we look fwd to them, let's salute
their forbears. For maritime history buffs an article written by me for 2007 issue of Quarterdeck is linked https://tinyurl.com/ybboomnd
