#MinorityMentalHealth Month started in 2008, and its full name is Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.
Bebe, a Black woman, was an author + advocate for mental health in BIPOC communities. She also co-founded @NAMICommunicate LA.

So why should there be a whole month for Minority/BIPOC mental health?
Well, 1st we can look at the impact of #mentalhealth issues on these communities. Rates of some psych disorders (like Depression & Anxiety) are about the same across races in the U.S.

Indigenous/ #NativeAmericans have the overall highest rates of PTSD and alcohol dependence.
We also have stats saying that about 9% of Black Americans will have PTSD in their lifetime compared to 7% of White people.

) so we're not able to get the full picture of mental health among BIPOC.

Look at these rates of mental health service use in PEOPLE WHO NEED MENTAL HEALTH CARE:
White: 48% (this is already too low!)
Black: 31%
Latino: 31%
Asians: 22%
What's going on??

Basically, it's a mix of things but mostly...

#MinorityMentalHealth Month is important because Minorities/BIPOC (esp. teens) need mental health care but they are much less likely to get it.
