Good morning!🌞

Did you know? July is #MinorityMentalHealth Month (also known as #BIPOCMentalHealthMonth)!

Where did it come from and why does it matter?

A lil' 🧵 (1/11)
#MinorityMentalHealth Month started in 2008, and its full name is Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.

Bebe, a Black woman, was an author + advocate for mental health in BIPOC communities. She also co-founded @NAMICommunicate LA.

(2/11)
So why should there be a whole month for Minority/BIPOC mental health?🤔

Well, 1st we can look at the impact of #mentalhealth issues on these communities. Rates of some psych disorders (like Depression & Anxiety) are about the same across races in the U.S.

BUT...

(3/11)
Compared to White people, minorities in the U.S. have mental health issues that:

⏱️Last longer

đź’ĄHave a worse impact on their lives

AND...

(4/11)
The % of teens who attempted suicide in 2017 by race/ethnicity ( @CDCgov) :

Black (9.8%) 🚨
Latino (8.2%)
White (6.1%)

AND...

(5/11)
Indigenous/ #NativeAmericans have the overall highest rates of PTSD and alcohol dependence.

We also have stats saying that about 9% of Black Americans will have PTSD in their lifetime compared to 7% of White people.

BUT...

(6/11)
We don't have good ways of "diagnosing" racial trauma (see thread linked here👇🏽) so we're not able to get the full picture of mental health among BIPOC.

AND here's the part where it gets really bad...

(7/11)
Look at these rates of mental health service use in PEOPLE WHO NEED MENTAL HEALTH CARE:

White: 48% (this is already too low!)
Black: 31%
Latino: 31%
Asians: 22%

What's going on?? 🤔

(8/11)
Basically, it's a mix of things but mostly...

✔️ Mental health care costs too much
✔️ The system is hard to navigate and it's hard to get services
✔️ Stigma

This infographic from @samhsagov lays it out really nicely.

SO...

(9/11)
#MinorityMentalHealth Month is important because Minorities/BIPOC (esp. teens) need mental health care but they are much less likely to get it.

ONE FINAL NOTE...

(10/11)
💪🏽Let's be sure to recognize how resilient & strong #BIPOC communities have been with so little support. And honor the non-therapy #healing practices that contributed.

Still, that is NO excuse for the mental health system to leave them behind.
