So I spent four hours talking with @kanyewest yesterday, his first interview since his Fourth of July Tweet declaring he’s running for president in 2020. First, West reiterated that he’s running this year under a new political banner, the Birthday Party, with Michelle Tidball, an obscure Wyoming preacher, as his running mate. West-Tidball 2020? (2/x)
West said he has no campaign infrastructure and no advisors, other than @KimKardashian and @elonmusk. West already has plans for the latter: “I proposed to him to be the head of our space program.” (3/x)
West says he’s done with @realDonaldTrump. “I am taking the red hat off, with this interview.” Why? “It looks like one big mess to me. I don’t like that I caught wind that he hid in the bunker.” (4/x)
That said, West clearly has still affinity for Trump and did not deny that a run could be made to try to cleave votes from @JoeBiden. “To say that the Black vote is Democratic is a form of racism and white supremacy.” (5/x)
West told me he’s never voted before – and registered to vote (in Wyoming) for the first time this week. (6/x)
What would a West White House look like? Team of Rivals? War cabinet? Try Black Panther. “Like in the movie in Wakanda when the king went to visit that lead scientist to have the shoes wrap around her shoes. Just the amount of innovation that can happen.” (7/x)
West says he suffered from Covid-19 in Feb. “Chills, shaking in the bed, taking hot showers, looking at videos telling me what I'm supposed to do to get over it....someone had told me Drake had the coronavirus and my response was Drake can’t be sicker than me!” (laughs) (8/x)
But West says the path forward from the pandemic is prayer, not a vaccine, which is “the mark of the beast. They want to put chips inside us.” (9/x)
West also told me that he believes that “Planned Parenthoods have been placed inside cities by white supremacists to do the Devil’s work.” (10/x)
Noteworthy anecdote from West, re the Trump White House and race: “One time I talked to Jared Kushner who was saying ‘We don’t have Black leaders, we just have hustlers’. Why? Because they killed all the Black leaders." (11/x)
While West was firm that he was running in 2020 for the bulk of our interview, he gave himself a 30-day out during the first hour. The challenges of getting a new name on the ballot at this stage are formidable. Stay tuned. (12/x)
