"Long distance don't last."

That's what Oikawa's friends in Argentina say when he tells them he's in a relationship with someone back home.

"Oh? How long have you two been together?" +

He tells them they've known each other since they were kids, and are best friends, but got together only in high school. They find it rather humorous, for some reason.

They think his childhood friends-to-best friends-to-lovers relationship is really cute, but +
"you're probably tgt because you're comfortable with the familiarity you share with him."

He says they're not like that. Iwa-chan isn't just familiar, he's home.

But they say, "Once you step out and see what's out there, you'll wonder why you stuck with someone so early on." +
"And we're in Argentina baby! You never know what you'll find, or who you'll meet."

But he's not like that.

Someone asks if his partner is back in Japan and what's the time difference with Japan again? 12 hours? Oikawa gets some sort of cheap satisfaction when he says +
Iwa-chan's in the US, but that quickly disappears like smoke when it's met with another bout of laughter.

"Then maybe he'll find someone else sooner than you!"

They're joking he knows, but he can't work up the same laughter or even crack a smile.

Iwa-chan's not like that. +
Sure, they can't see each other as much,or touch for months on end. At times, they can't even seem to understnd each other in the same conversations.

But when they do see each other, Oikawa feels he's on the doorstep of home, even tho they're thousnds of miles away from Sendai. +
When they touch, whether it's fingers ghosting feather-like trails in their wake or hands digging bruises into skin, Oikawa wonders how anyone could ever touch him in the same way, could make him feel like he's unravelling at the seams. +
When they're side by side, a second or a continent away, at the root of it all is a shared understanding that they're not the same person, with different thoughts and different dreams and different words, but with a heart that beats for each other--built to love--built to last. +
And maybe they've had their ups and downs, but they're Tooru and Hajime, who fight for each other as hard as they fight for their dreams, who always know the way back home. +
Long-distance don't last? Maybe they should say that to the rings that hang around their necks, a promise of forever between two boys who are built to last.
