I wanted to poll twitter to get an understanding of what the lay of the land in 2020 looks like with regards to professionalism in medicine. This is a thread but also a general sampling of opinion as we see the vision of a “professional” physician evolve:
There is a particular look/appearance to what is considered a professional. This is subjective, Interpret it as you please.
A physician posting online an intended private photo of themselves in a bathing suit on vacation in Cancun with a margarita in hand is:
It is important that physicians separate their social media pages as “professional page” and “personal page”. As in, it is important that a physician not overlap their professional and personal lives online
It is unprofessional for a physician to “post extreme views” online as it might alienate a certain audience who may not feel the same way they do
_____ physician is celebrating Pride 🌈 and chose to post a photo online of themselves in fishnets wearing drag. This is considered:
_____ physician lives rurally and loves to hunt. They are a gun enthusiast and posts regularly about their hunting and photos of themselves with a gun. This is considered:
The reality is that medicine like other things in life functions to put physicians into a “box” with regards to how they can/can’t behave. There is a lot of subjectivity to what we identify as a professional and I think it’s important we talk about how we redefine this
It’s important we chat about this because there is so much subjectivity here and without schools and our profession @cpso_ca identifying the truly gray nature of what is considered a “professional” we risk weaponizing it against our students @Sarah_Mojarad
So, this is the freehand portion. Tell me... what do YOU think a professional doctor in 2020 looks like?
My opinion is that the standard view of a doctor being a conservatively dressed physician who is only allowed to talk about sun safety online is likely antiquated and we need to talk more about this as we introduce the new generation into medicine
