Do you know who could really do with £10 off their meal out Mon-Weds in August? Parents worn out entertaining and feeding kids at home who want a pizza & a rest; people who want to take their elderly parent (who's shielded for months) out for a treat but are strapped. I'm for it
And I can think of at least half a dozen restaurants where I live that already do prix fixe around £20 or less early weeks for whom this will help them stay open + keep people in work. I don't understand the sneering.
If you're the kind of person (like me) who is happy to spend money on meals out and has it, and who might even spend hundreds of pounds of lunch for special occasions, this may seem like nothing. But, guess what: it's not for us or the kinds of restaurants we might go to.
Ppl who eat in high(er) end restaurants don't need financial incentives to go out for meals. They need confidence + may even spend more per head to enable fewer covers in their fave places. Maybe people who fall into that category might just say fair play on this and move on.
If this is taken up, it both makes economic sense AND means that places will be able to afford to open more nights w fewer covers (to ensure social distancing) b/c business is incentivised on the (usually) quietest nights of the weeks. So hopefully also aids in social distancing.
