He doesn’t just understands, he appreciates it. Song Kang Ho always look the most beautiful in Park Chan Wook movies.
I’ve been staring at Song Kang Ho’s close ups from Park Chan Wook & Bong Joon Ho’s movies & they feel strikingly different. BJH uses SKH close ups for dramatic purpose. Whereas PCW’s close ups on SKH showcases his most aesthetic features. Sometimes even focusing just on the eyes.
But for PCW it doesn’t feel like the close ups are merely tools for tension & drama. There’s something more poignant behind them. At times it was as if the Director was drawn or even hypnotized by Song Kang Ho’s face.
It’s amazing how Song Kang Ho travels the spectrum of emotions in each scene. It can’t be captured in screenshots. But when you watch him, even 5 seconds feels like a rollercoaster of emotions.
