Did you know that Malaysia has declared a state of Emergency a total of 5 times since we became an independent nation?

Oh, which 5? Let's take a trip to a few generations ago 👇🏼
The first time Emergency was declared was in 1948.

It was called the Malayan Emergency. This was a result of the conflict between the commonwealth forces and communist forces.

This lasted a total of 12 years from 1948 until 1960.
The second time Malaysia called for an Emergency was due to the Indonesian-Malaysia Confrontation in 1963.

This time it was a result of Indonesia's opposition to the creation of Malaysia.

This was resolved in 1966 when Indonesia formally recognised Malaysia.
In 1966, Malaysia declared another emergency. This time it was the 1966 Sarawak Constitutional Crisis.

This was set into motion when 21 out 42 members of the state legislature declared they did not have confidence in the then Sarawak CM, Stephen Kalong Ningkan.
This was resolved when Stephen Kalong Ningkan was removed and replaced by Tawi Sli as the New Chief Minister.

Fun fact: Taib Mahmud, who would later on become the CM, was expelled as a Minister by Stephen Kalong Ningkan and was accused of trying to topple the state government.
The fourth time we called for emergency is the most infamous.

It was over the May 13 1969 incident.

Which led to the suspension of Parliament and allowing the National Operations Council, also known as Majlis Gerakan Negara (MAGERAN), to take over the administration of Malaysia
The fifth and final time we had to declare an Emergency was in 1977 due to the Kelantan Emergency.

Again, a no confidence motion was tabled in the state assembly.
Mohamad Nasir, the then MB of Kelantan, refused to resign even after receiving 20 votes from fellow PAS assemblyman.

13 UMNO and 1 MCA assemblyman walked out of the hall as a sign of protest.

The MB then requested the Regent of Kelantan to dissolve the state assembly.
After he was denied a dissolution. Riots broke out across Kelantan. This led to the YDPA (also the then Sultan Kelantan) to declare a state of Emergency.

Akta Kuasa Darurat (Kelantan) 1977 was passed in Parliament and the Director of Government took over power in Kelantan.
The issue was resolved when an election was held in Kelantan, months ahead of the national election.

UMNO won 23 seats.

This allowed UMNO to form Government in Kelantan for the first time.
And that concludes the 5 time Malaysia declared an Emergency throughout the years.

Here's to hoping that our generation and the future generations will never have to experience it first-hand.
