Part of why we are where we are is we bought into the bullshit that all opinions on every subject are worthy of respect and consideration /1
We entertained the notion that there was a “debate” between evolution and creationism when the truth was there was one scientifically illiterate side and another side that was qualified to have the conversation /2
We’ve done the same thing with vaccines and climate change. We watched one political party double down on politicizing anti science, yet kept running around saying both parties are the same /3
So now we can’t be surprised when wearing a face covering is something that correlates with partisan identification /4
The golden mean is one of the most misguided social conventions ever; no, the right answer isn’t always in the middle, sometimes one side is just fucking wrong /5
So that Harper’s letter seems like the worst instance of not reading the room; this is exactly the time in which baseless, poor thought out, socially destructive viewpoints need to be excoriated and marginalized/6
And another thing, how many times do we have to tell people that free speech doesn’t mean freedom from criticism; people are perfectly free to think you’re ignorant or an asshole based on what you choose to say /end
