Wait ok I have more to say about the Harper's letter, sorry.

As a free speech advocate, what gets me the most about these folks is that not one of them has ever commented on what I see as some of the most pressing expression issues of our time (new thread, sorry sorry):
The automagic (online anyway) and systematic suppression of any voice deemed by the State Department to be "terrorist" without due process, and to the serious detriment of satire, counterspeech, and history.

They've had no comment.
The suppression of Palestinian voices by campus crusaders, online platforms, and the Israeli government. Not only have few of them spoken up about it, but some of them have spoken *in favor* of it.
The unequal treatment by social media platforms of LGBTQ+ voices, sex workers, and anyone adjacent to sexual expression. Not only have few of them spoken up about it, but some of them supported a bill that crushed it.
To many of the Harper's signatories, the right to be hateful is paramount, more important than any other speech, and that's what disgusts me so much.
Other things I haven't seen any commentary on from the Harper's elite clique:
- The crackdown by the Sisi government on dissidents
- The systematic erasure of Syrian history by YouTube
- The wrongful use of the Espionage Act against Assange
