I don’t know if people understand that classism and racism are not separate or unrelated problems. You’re classist because you hate poor people which can be easily translated as black people.
I want to unpack the classist connotations attached to people in the hood during this global pandemic. Mostly calling out my very problematic “better blacks” friends.
1.1 People in the hood use public transportation to work in Sandton, Midrand, Fourways and the likes - this is to say that they could also get corona in the taxi/ Gautrain or even at work from a co-worker who lives in those areas.
In a very highly populated area like most places in the hood, it is very easy for everyone to have the virus. One household has 10 people and if the breadwinner has it then you’re most likely going to find that everyone in the house has it , cause even isolation is impossible.
1.2 Saying that people in the hood don’t really care about their health or corona is actually untrue. The can’t afford masks and sanitizers, unlike you my friend. Have you ever though of distributing sanitizers in townships?
1.3 The high cases of corona in townships is not even out of being disruptive, uncaring or uninformed members of society, it’s because they would rather use the money for basic necessities/ immediate needs.
It’s unfortunate that the lottery of birth was not on their side.
1.4 Sitting in your comfortable home and cushioned by your privilege doesn’t make it okay for you to call your friends in the townships, to ask about the state of security and whether people have their masks on at all times. It’s actually a very disgusting and classist behavior
1.5 For your information, people have their masks on at all times in public spaces because it is compulsory to have it on also remember that there is heavy policing in townships cause “Poor people are problematic” and deserve to be killed by police for not following regulations.
1.6 Please use your privilege to keep yourself informed about what’s happening in the world and in the hood because it seems to be a place of interest and stop asking your friends in the hood silly questions. You’re being unkind, really
1.7 We are all very worried about our health because of high cases in our areas and the sourrounding areas and now we must look at your tweets trolling people in the hood for not wearing masks. Are you distributing those masks in the hood or tweeting from a place of comfort ?
