Thread On “Cancel Culture”: I am against absolutism & absurd purity tests that are often unattainable and self-destructive. I’m all for free speech, but unequal power dynamics and systems mean not all of us have the same platform, privilege, and access to this speech. 1/

Unlike some who complain about feared cancellation, I’ve actually been boycotted & smeared by the right, & even the left. It’s, unfortunately, part of the public & social media ecosystem, which we agree is often toxic. But this latest outrage is histrionic “anxiety.” 2/

Are most really being canceled? I don't see it. I see a lot of tut-tutting from many who otherwise have tons of privileged spaces, platforms, access & protection. I get the overall gist of the idea & support it. Again, I’ve been boycotted & canceled from a community. 3/

Here, I see otherwise powerful people terrified bc they feel their ideas & opinions will simply be criticized. We're all having the debate now. It's a good debate bc it includes so many communities who have been silenced or shut up just to survive in media & other industries. 4/

Power, relevancy & gatekeeper status of many who have held these positions forever are currently being threatened. That’s what’s terrifying. That's what causing the freak-out. The fear of "replacement" & sharing the conch with others. I for one am fine with this type of horror.
