Lessons for leftists in a political revolution (a thread):
1. Don’t channel all your political energy into electing a candidate - the odds are often stacked against them by the establishment. (Bernie Sanders, Jeremy Corbyn, Gough Whitlam) 1/
2. Don’t focus on issues that divide us - the left often makes the mistake of alienating other leftists on minor issues. The YangGang and BernieBros have more to agree on than disagree. Remember, we are not in a position of power and need as many in our movement for change. 2/
3. Ditch identity politics. That being said, I don’t mean we don’t want diversity in the political atmosphere. I mean we shouldn’t back candidates purely based on diversity. Policy should be more important. 3/
4. Keep our protests going, on any issue that matters to us- the greatest power the people have is to disrupt the money making mechanisms of the elite, forcing them to compromise. 4/
5. Let’s leave leftist terminology (Marxist, Ancom, etc.) out of our daily conversations with people. Think of how many people who may not be educated on the issue we are isolating from the movement because of this. 5/
6. Speak in their language. When trying to talk to a right wing person about climate change, I make an economic case of how the continuous degradation of our resources hurts us in the L/T. This works better than ‘if we don’t do this, we are doomed.’ 6/
7. Compassion. We work FOR the people - try to understand where people come from before you label them as racists for voting Trump or enablers for voting Biden. There are good/bad people in every group and we need to understand them before we shame them. 7/7
