On Dean street in Crown Heights where an impromptu action came together to observe intimidation of two remaining tenants, per one former and one current tenant. This is from a little bit ago. Landlord currently on the stoop recording
Crown Heights Tenant Union and Equality for Flatbush are here, among others. Former says this is a tactic they plan to deploy more as pandemic-related moratorium lifts and evictions ramp up. It does not seem like this landlord is trying to physically remove remaining tenants atm
crowd has been consistent for about an hour, with current and former tenants on the mic. one former tenant says she is recovering from brain surgery and having to vacate compounded stress
now speakers are reading out landlord’s address, phone number and other businesses. Specifics aside, illustrative of big tenant advocacy energy in nyc right now to see this kind of action in defense of tenants. New chant: “no justice no sleep, fuck your predatory creeps!”
new escalation: supporters of the tenants have occupied the steps of the building
chant now with a few nypd officers inside the building: “no landlords no cops! All evictions have to stop!”
backdrop to all this: nyc marshals are currently under orders not to carry out evictions. Per tenants here, landlord has been trying to empty building for some time. Some tenants described renting month to month. Chants of “go home!” directed at landlord still inside.
phone is dying but latest tactic from organizers is entering the building as guests of the tenants. Bullhorn instruction of “do not touch the landlord.” @jangeloof is here for continuing coverage!
Lol I mean @jangelooff
one more detail from earlier: tenants shamed the landlords by bringing out handwritten signs they said demonstrate LLs’ past efforts to skirt city inspectors. all kinds of different protest tactics on display>
a crew of supporters camped out overnight at 1214 Dean to support the tenants. Now a new morning shift is filtering in. Folks say the plan is to keep a lookout and maintain a presence. sounds like it was quiet overnight.
