I spent much of my afternoon reading through & grading student reflections to today’s assignment for the summer #DCHistory course I teach. Their honesty stuck with me.

“I feel almost overwhelmed with all this new intel on DC’s rich history.”

“I thought it was really cool how..
much DC was influenced by African Americans both enslaved & free.”

“When I read about #AlethiaBrowningTanner & #YarrowMamout, all I could think about was why hadn’t I heard about them before. Obviously a US History class about the whole country might not focus on people from...
DC, but I’m glad I learned about them in this class.”

“It makes me think, did the founding fathers really build this country? I think that they get more credit than they deserve. DC in all was basically built by minorities specifically African Americans but yet
they seem to be treated the worst nowadays.”
