All you closeted authoritarians who are like "well that letter makes some points," please define "cancel culture." There is a 100% chance that your willful ignorance is only exceeded by your unwarranted confidence
It's important to talk about appropriation outside of halloween costumes. When concepts originated by marginalized people, for example Black women, hit the mainstream, it becomes very strong evidence of the harm of cultural appropriation
Marginalized people fundamentally communicate differently with each other because there is a difference in the way the world responds to you when people like you historically have no structural power
Panic over "cancel culture" is disingenuous precisely because the communities that first started using the concept (jokingly!) have no systemic ability to cancel anyone. It's irony, you see
The "cancel culture" that they expect us to have deep conversations about is what happened when whites started canceling each other. Like many things, it's only a problem when whites join in, and even then the negative connotations are wholly anti-Black
See the sleights of hand? Oppressed groups doing what oppressed groups do, oppressors then appropriating culture to their own ends, then the fallout further marginalizes the original oppressed groups
These logical pretzels are only possible via cultural precedents like virulent anti-Blackness, not that the non-Black intellectuals currently dominating the conversation give any fucks
