al-Taftāzānī said:
Their (Muʿtazilī) school of thought spread among the people until al-Shaykh Abū ʿl-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī said to his teacher, Abū ʿAlī al-Jubbāʿī, "What have youto say about three brothers, one of whom died obedient, another disobedient, and the third in infancy?"
Their (Muʿtazilī) school of thought spread among the people until al-Shaykh Abū ʿl-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī said to his teacher, Abū ʿAlī al-Jubbāʿī, "What have youto say about three brothers, one of whom died obedient, another disobedient, and the third in infancy?"
He answered, "The first will be rewarded with the Garden (al-janna) , the second will be punished with the Fire (al-nār) and the third will neither be rewarded nor punished."
Al-Ash& #39;arī answered, "And what if the third should say, & #39;Lord, why didst Thou make me die in infancy, and not detain me until I grew up and believed on Thee, and obeyed and thus entered the Garden?& #39; What would the Lord the Exalted say then?"
He answered, "The Lord would say, & #39;I knew that if thou shouldst grow up thou wouldst disobey and enter the Fire, so it was better for thce to die in infancy."
Al-Ashʿarī said, "And if the second should say, & #39;Lord, why didst Thou not cause me to die in infancy so that I should not disobey and enter the Fire?& #39; What would the Lord say then?"
